As a vibrant cultural hub with a deep-rooted Jewish presence, Mexico City is the perfect destination to center Jewish identity, history, and a sense of global connection.

Mexico City, with its deep-rooted Jewish presence, offers an ideal destination for students to learn about Jewish identity, heritage, and connection. Home to over 50,000 Jews, Mexico City’s Jewish community is one of the largest in Latin America. Jews arrived in Mexico in the 16th century from Spain and Portugal, followed by Europe in the 1800s, Eastern Europe specifically in the 1920s, and a wave of Middle Eastern Jews during the 20th century. Students will be given a unique opportunity to experience the resilience, perseverance, and cultural adaptability of Jewish people, in addition to their enormous contributions to Mexican society.
Our journey to Mexico City is ideal for students who wish to:

The first day allows students to unwind and settle in after their travels. Students will stay in the historic neighborhood of Polanco, home to several synagogues, kosher restaurants, Jewish schools, and community centers.

We will spend the second day exploring Teotihuacán, known for its massive pyramids, and learning about the history of Mesoamerican culture.

We will visit the Jewish Quarter of Mexico City and the Justo Sierra synagogue, an important cultural site that showcases the history and traditions of the Jewish community in Mexico. Later, we will explore Zócalo, the Metropolitan cathedral, and the Museum of the Templo Mayor.

We will tour the Historic Center of Mexico City, as well as the Palacio de Minería, Palacio de Correos, and Palacio de Bellas Artes. Then we will visit the Colegio de San Ildefonso and Secretaría de Educación Pública.

Next, we will tour the Olami School, Colonia Roma, and the CDIJUM, which preserves the history and heritage of the Jewish community in Mexico. Afterwards, we will visit the CDI Centro Deportivo Israelita, the Mexican Jewish Community Center.

Later, we will visit the National Museum of Anthropology and tour Castillo de Chapultepec. That night, we will organize an enriching group Shabbat dinner and services for students and faculty and an opportunity to celebrate Shabbat at one of the temples in Mexico City.

Students can enjoy an optional Shabbat lunch, explore the open gallery at Chapultepec Park, and experience a private hop on-hop off turibus around Mexico City and the Historic Center in the evening. Time will be reserved throughout the day for group activities and reflections.

This final day invites students to explore the ancient canals in Xochimilco, stroll nearby through the Coyoacán market, and then visit Frida Kahlo’s museum. The trip culminates with a performance of an Israeli folk dance competition, CDI Festival Aviv.
